A Flash Can is a thread-on muzzle device, designed to force all muzzle blast and flash forward, downrange of the shooter. This differentiates it from a flash hider, compensator, or brake, which use a pattern of holes to redirect blast any number of directions around or behind the muzzle.
A Flash Can is especially useful on a firing line, or at night, as in a home defense situation, because the blast and flash are directed away from the shooter and anyone next to them. They don't aid in recoil control or reduce noise, but the shooter may experience less perceived noise as the blast is forced forward.
